By Scott French, Senior Editor RECORDS FALL: The San Diego Spirit set four WUSA records and shared in a fifth in its 6-1 rout of New York at Torero Stadium. The Spirit set marks for most goals in a game, margin of victory, most assists (8), most points (20) and — with the Power — tied the record for most goals by both teams in a match. Philadelphia owned the most-goals mark (in a 5-1 win over Carolina last August) and shared the margin-of-victory best with Atlanta (in a 4-0 win over San Jose last August). Zhang Ouying and Shannon MacMillan each scored two goals and added an assist in the romp and are, after two weeks, the league’s Nos. 1 and 2 scorers. Zhang also tallied in a 2-1 loss to Carolina in the opener. A seventh San Diego goal, by Shauna Rohbock early in the match, was disallowed after an offside call. BEST GOAL: Either of MacMillan’s goals are worthy; we’ll go with the second. Surrounded by three Power defenders, she chips the ball to Jen Mascaro and slips behind her markers for the headed return. After New York goalkeeper Saskia Webber halts her first shot, MacMillan beats Tammy Pearman to the right post to deposit the rebound. DWINDLING CROWDS: Last year’s top draw, the Washington Freedom, lured only 4,713 — the smallest audience it has played before — for its victory Sunday over reigning champion San Jose. Cold, rainy weather didn’t help, but the crowd, as it were, was 1,683 short of Washington’s previous home worst. The average for the weekend was 5,411; through seven games, it’s 6,532, about 2,000 off the league’s aim. BEAT UP: The Freedom did well to beat the CyberRays. Dominated by the Power last week and in the first half against San Jose, Washington battled strongly in the second half and overcame an early deficit on goals by former ‘Ray Jacqui Little and “reserve” forward Meredith Beard, the latter in the 82nd minute. Coach Jim Gabarra has had to make do with a makeshift lineup and little depth. Injuries have deprived him of forward Mia Hamm (knee), defender Casey Zimny (recuperation from surgery) and goalkeepers Siri Mullinix (shoulder) and Erin Fahey (hip flexor) for both games. Defender Skylar Little (Jacqui’s twin) was back Sunday after missing the opener with a red-card suspension, but midfielder Monica Gerardo — who scored the Freedom’s goal in the 4-1 loss to New York — was on the sidelines after pulling a hamstring in training on Friday. And top acquisition Steffi Jones, the German-American defender, isn’t expected to arrive until late May. WHO+DA THUNK IT? Two weeks in the WUSA season and every team has a win … except the Atlanta Beat — nearly everybody’s pick to win the title — which fell to 0-2 with a 3-1 loss at Boston.
