By RIDGE MAHONEY BEST GOAL: There aren’t a lot of choices, as only three games were played and seven goals scored. Top of the charts is the Metros’ second goal against Colorado, which was tucked away by Brad Davis with a classy finish. Rodrigo Faria controlled a long kick from keeper Tim Howard and pushed a square pass through two defenders. Davis, racing out of midfield into the box, touched the ball once and then lifted it over Scott Garlick with the outside of his left foot. A free-kick blast by Jason Kreis in the Burn’s 1-1 tie with Los Angeles overpowered goalkeeper Matt Reis, who got a hand to it but couldn’t keep it out. NOT A FISH STORY: Carlos Ruiz scored his fifth goal in three games as the Galaxy tied Dallas, 1-1. Nicknamed “El Pescadito (Little Fish),” the Guatemalan got his head to a Simon Elliott corner kick in a packed penalty area to score the equalizer in the 85th minute. He has scored all five Galaxy goals this season and won the first two matches with overtime winners. The league record for consecutive games with a goal in a season is seven by Raul Diaz Arce and Wolde Harris. ARROWHEAD ZEROS: A new stadium for the Wizards can’t come too soon for the Quakes. They were shut out again Saturday in a 2-0 loss at Arrowhead Stadium. Of the six blankings they incurred last year, two came at Arrowhead. San Jose was also blanked at Arrowhead Stadium in 2000. The Quakes have not scored there since July 31, 1999 and the scoreless streak is 465 minutes. A task force was set up last week to research the building of a soccer stadium/complex in Johnson County, Kan. San Jose’s other shutout loss this season came courtesy of Colorado, which visits Spartan Stadium this weekend. WELCOME BACK: Kansas City midfielder Chris Klein scored a goal and set up another in his first game back after suffering an ACL tear last October. A homecoming for ex-Rapid Ross Paule wasn’t as joyous. In his return to Denver, where he played five seasons before being traded to the Metros, he received two yellow cards and was sent off. The Metros were leading, 1-0, at the time. SUB SIGHTINGS: A few minutes after Paule was sent off, Davis replaced Diego Serna and scored the clinching goal with the Metros down a man. Another sub to make his mark was Stephen Armstrong. He replaced Eric Quill at halftime and played a role in both Wizards’ goals, the second of which came on his excellent cross that Chris Brown headed into the net. SAVIORS: Top goalkeeping displays last weekend were performed by Matt Jordan of Dallas and Tim Howard of the MetroStars. Jordan was credited with nine saves, including a deflection of a Brian Mullan volley and a snuff of Ruiz one-on-one. Howard saved a low drive from John Spencer and stopped Chris Henderson from point-blank range.
