2001 MLS champion San Jose faces Mexican League defending champ Pachuca tonight in a first-leg CONCACAF Championships Cup quarterfinal clash in Mexico. The Quakes will be without Landon Donovan and Jeff Agoos, who are in Dublin for the U.S. friendly. San Jose advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 aggregate win over Honduras’ Olimpia. Pachuca will visit San Jose April 24 for the return leg. Pachuca is famous as Mexico’s first soccer club, having been founded by British miners in Hidalgo in 1901. It was part of the nation’s First Division’s inaugural season in 1907 but has spent much of its time in the lower division. It won four titles in the early part of the century before going on a drought until 1999, when it won the 1999 Invierno title under current Mexico coach Javier Aguirre. It finished runner-up in the 2001 Verano championship before recapturing the crown last season (Invierno). Pachuca will be without four World Cup-bound players, who will be playing against Bulgaria tonight in New Jersey: Manuel Vidrio, Francisco Gabriel de Anda, Alberto Rodriguez and Gabriel Caballero. Two other MLS teams are in the quarterfinals. Kansas City will try to overcome a 2-1 deficit against Mexico’s Santos Laguna on April 24 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chicago Fire’s clash with Morelia is on hold until Morelia is free from its Libertadores campaign.
