C-Rays hold first pick The Bay Area CyberRays will pick first in the league’s March 20 waiver draft, but only if they cut seven players from their 27-player roster. Each of the eight teams has to cut down to 24 players by Sunday, March 18, because each can only carry 24 players into the league training camp in Chula Vista, Calif., March 22-31. However, to participate in the four-round waiver draft, a team has to have less than 24 players. Teams that cut down to 24 players are ineligible to draft on Tuesday, because drafting any players would put them over the 24-player limit. Teams that cut to 23 players would only draft in the fourth (last) round. Cutting to 22 players allows a team to exercise its picks in the third and fourth rounds, cutting to 21 allows picks in the second through fourth rounds, and cutting to 20 allows picks in all rounds. Hoffman hits winner New York defeated WFC Autotraders, 2-1, under the lights at UC San Diego on March 15 in La Jolla, Calif. The Power controlled the game from the opening kick as it took the play to Autotraders. Carlene Stenson scored the game’s first goal in the 25th minute off a cross from Kerry Connors. Autotraders grabbed the equalizer in the 10th minute of the second half. The tie game was short-lived though, as former Penn State star Rachel Hoffman scored her first goal of the preseason with a solo effort just five minutes later. She slotted a beautifully placed ball into the lower left side of the net to give New York the victory. The Power out-shot Autotraders, 17-6.
