WUSA Preseason: San Diego splits two with New York

The San Diego Spirit and New York Power split a couple of preseason scrimmages March 8 at UC San Diego’s Rimac Field. The Power won the first match, 2-0, and the Spirit took the second, 4-1. The matches were played with 35-minute halves. U.S. midfielder Shannon MacMillan scored four times in the Spirit’s win, tallying in the fifth minute, the 19th, 23rd and 26th. Melissa McBean struck in the second half as New York avoided the shutout. Power goalkeeper Suzy Strazulla made four saves to post the shutout in New York’s victory. Norway striker Ann Kristin Aarones and Maryland product Emily Janss scored off assists from Christie Pearce and Sara Whalen, respectively.
