Julie Foudy, Shannon MacMillan and “Marvelous” Mercy Akide all scored as the San Diego Spirit defeated Beijing FC, 3-0, March 18 at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The loss ends the Chinese club’s U.S. tour with a 1-3-0 record. It’s only win came in its previous game, a 2-1 result against Philadelphia. “It was good that we were able to play a team like Beijing FC today,” Spirit coach Carlos Juarez said. “It allowed us to do some things with our formations and to see some players before the cut-down date.” Juarez referred to the March 18 deadline to trip the team’s roster from the current 28 to between 20 and 24 players. Erica Strey assisted on Foudy’s goal in the fourth minute, Foudy set up MacMillan in the 14th minute and Akide scored an unassisted goal in the 79th minute. San Diego goalkeeper Melissa Moore played the whole match and made five saves.
