Sasha Victorine and rookie Brian Mullan each scored as Los Angeles knocked off Miami 2-1 in MLS Spring Training 2001 action Friday night at Lockhart Stadium. After an opening flurry by Miami, Los Angeles settled in and posted a pair of last first-half goals to jump ahead, 2-1. Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman stood out for the Galaxy, making seven saves to earn a preseason win. The Fusion unveiled a host of new players in front of its home fans, including midfielders Chris Henderson and Preki, acquired in separate offseason deals with MLS Cup champions Kansas City. In addition, Honduran Alex Pineda Chacon made his Fusion debut, coming in at striker at halftime. “When we get to know each other’s playing styles and train together, we’ll improve our communication and ball movement on the field,” said Pineda Chacon, who first arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on a plane Thursday night. “I am a little tired, but the match helped me get started on my conditioning.” Miami scored the opening goal of the match in the 14th minute. Henderson picked out forward Pete Marino deep in the right corner. Marino crossed for a streaking Diego Serna, who tapped home from seven yards out in the center of the box. The Galaxy knotted the score at 1-1 in the 33rd minute, as Mullan finished off a nice setup from Ezra Hendrickson and Simon Elliott. Los Angeles went up 2-1 in the 38th minute thanks to a defensive lapse from the Miami defense. Defender Pablo Mastroeni mishandled a loose ball at the top of the arc, and Victorine pounced on the ball and placed a shot past a stunned Fusion keeper Jeff Cassar into the upper right hand corner from 25 yards out. “The ball was played short by their outside back, it was just a 50-50 ball that I got to,” Victorine said. “I took one touch and tried to get the ball up over the goalkeeper. It has been a long preseason, which has been the best thing you can get as a young player.” Miami pressured Los Angeles goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for much of the second half, but could not find the equalizer. Pineda Chacon sent two strong chances on goal midway through the half, testing Hartman from outside the box in the 63rd and 75th minutes. “I was delighted in the first half of the contest. We came out playing very well and played some good, attractive football,” Fusion head coach Ray Hudson. “After we scored the first goal, we had a little bit of a collapse. We have to be more vindictive, more ruthless. When we smell blood, we have to go after the kill.” March 16 in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Miami 1 Los Angeles 2.
