Head Coach Bruce Arena has selected 23 players to represent the United States when it takes on China at Network Associates Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m. PT. The match will be shown live to a national television audience on ESPN2. Among the notables chosen by Arena is Brian McBride, who returns to the team for the first time since Sept. 3, when he scored the game-winning goal in a World Cup qualifier against Guatemala in Washington, D.C. McBride, who is currently on loan to English First Division club Preston North End from Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew, has scored in each of his last three matches for the United States. Four players from the Los Angeles Galaxy landed spots on Arena’s squad after recently winning the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and advancing to the World Club Championships. Kevin Hartman, Cobi Jones, Pete Vagenas and Greg Vanney will join six members of D.C. United, who also participated in the prestigious club tournament. Of the 23 players selected for the squad, 11 have represented the team on five or fewer occasions. Four of those players, DaMarcus Beasley, Carlos Bocanegra, Matt Jordan, and Mike Petke, are seeking their first-ever cap at the full international level.
