More than 5,000 tickets for the U.S. World Cup qualifier against Mexico at Columbus Crew Stadium on Feb. 28 sold out in just over six hours today. The 5,000 tickets went on sale to the public for the first time after a successful mail order pre-sale within the U.S. Soccer community sold nearly 19,000 tickets. A limited number of obstructed view seats remain on sale, but are only available for purchase at the Columbus Crew Stadium Box Office (open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday). The sell-out guarantees a crowd of more than 24,000 for the match (7:30 p.m. ET /ESPN2), the first in the 10-game Hexagonal on the qualifying trek to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. About 100 fans braved Columbus’ 30-degree temperature in the morning to buy tickets in person at the Crew Stadium Box Office, but a majority of the seats were purchased by phone.
