In biting cold temperatures in the high 30s against a Chinese team backed by 30,000 vocal fans, the U.S. womenÆs national team battled to a 1-1 draw at the Dragon Sports Centre Stadium in Hangzhou. Tiffeny Milbrett set up New York Power teammate Jennifer Lalor for the U.S. goal in the 17th minute. China defender Fan Yunjie, who will play for the San Diego Spirit of the WUSA, scored the equalizer four minutes later. Local organizers gave Lalor, who scored just her second career goal for the United States, $1,250 for scoring the first goal in the new stadium. Lalor, a former star at Santa Clara, last played for the national team on Aug. 3, 1995, as a substitute in a 4-2 friendly win over Australia. “The crowds for these two games were like the World Cup in 1999, only we weren’t on the receiving end of the support,” said U.S. coach April Heinrichs, whose team lost to China, 1-0, on Jan. 11 in Panyu. “Every time China touched the ball in their attacking half, the crowd was deafening and it surely inspired their players. In 2000, we really only played two matches before the Olympics in which the players couldn’t hear each other on the field. We’ve already played two this year.” Portland defender Lauren Orlandos earned her first cap with the full national team, getting the start. The tie moved the USA’s all-time record against China to 11-7-9. The U.S. team will not get together again until March when another young squad will compete in the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
