In the middle of his senior year, Jonathan McClain has suddenly found himself doing double duty for the University of Akron.
One of the key defenders on the Zips’ soccer team, ranked No. 17 in the latest Soccer America Top 25, McClain has spent the last two weekends also kicking for the Akron football team.
Two weeks ago, McClain and several of his soccer teammates attend a football tryout for a placekicker. Three days later, McClain kicked one point-after touchdown against Kent State.
Last Friday night, McClain, a 2005 a second-team All-MAC defender, played for the Zips in their 0-0 tie at Penn State, returned home in the middle of the night and then headed off to Cincinnati with his parents Saturday morning for the Zips’ football game. He was 2-for-2 on PAT attempts in Akron’s 20-14 loss to Cincinnati.
McClain earned Western Ohio All-League honors as a place-kicker and finished with 202 points in his prep kicking career.
