U.S. U-23 midfielder Joey DiGiamarino has left the Colorado Rapids to join Bayer Leverkusen of the German Bundesliga, where he joins U.S. Olympic teammates Landon Donovan and Frankie Hejduk. DiGiamarino, 23, played three seasons for the Rapids, appearing in 67 regular-season games, recording seven goals and seven assists, giving the Rapids a dangerous left-sided player in the midfield. DiGiamarino’s pace and scoring skills were bright spots for the Rapids, but several frustrating injuries and Olympic Team duty prevented “DiGi” from reaching his full potential with the Rapids. “It’s always been my dream to go to Europe and play for a top-flight team,” said DiGiamarino. “They saw me play a while ago and I waited for my contract with MLS to run out so I could sign a contract.” DiGiamarino has signed a standard contract with Bayer Leverkusen with two years guaranteed and two option years. DiGiamarino will leave for Germany at the end of the month once he is finished with rehabilitation from a left-groin injury which required surgery on Nov. 22, 2000. DiGiamarino underwent a pelvic floor repair as well as a left adductor release in Worcester, Mass.
