Connecticut defender Chris Gbandi won the Hermann Trophy as the top college player in the nation in the same weekend he and the Huskies won the Men’s College Cup. Notre Dame’s Anne Makinen won the women’s Hermann Trophy, which was her second player of the year award in one week. Makinen, a Finnish national team midfielder, also won the MAC Award. Both Hermann Trophies were awarded in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 9, the day before UConn defeated Creighton, 2-0, in the men’s final. Two days later, the Washington Freedom selected Makinen with the seventh overall pick in the WUSA draft.
