U.S. Olympic team forward Conor Casey decided to join the ranks of the growing legion of Americans abroad when he signed a contract with German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. Casey, the West Coast Conference Player of the Year in 1999 after leading the country in goals, will pass on his remaining eligibility at the University of Portland to play for Dortmund, who are currently third in the league behind Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen. The husky Casey attracted the attention of European scouts at the Olympics. He didn’t score but was at times a handful for opposing defensives with his touch. Casey, 19, is expected to report to Dortmund early in January. Dortmund, the 1997 European Cup champion, is currently coached by former German national team star Matthias Sammer.
