Notre Dame coach Randy Waldrum, fresh off a 2-1 semifinal loss to North Carolina in the Women’s College Cup in San Jose, Calif., turned down the offer to coach the Bay Area CyberRays of the WUSA. The second-year Irish coach, who has led his team to the College Cup two straight times, said that he would have made the same decision about the San Jose-based CyberRays had the Irish won this year’s championship. He is expected to sign a five-year contract extension at Notre Dame. Waldrum had agreed to coach the CyberRays in November. But just 24 hours after the semifinal loss, and about 48 hours before the start of the WUSA combine in Boca Raton, Fla., the Irish boss changed his mind. “I was surprised and disappointed, but I respect his decision,” CyberRays general manager Marlene Bjornsrud said. “There had been indications recently that this might happen, and we had made contingency arrangements.” The CyberRays now turn their attention to an unnamed candidate, who is already in Florida with two potential assistant coaches to prepare for the Dec. 4-9 combine and Dec. 10-11 draft.
