William Fisher Palo Alto, Calif. Why were the U.S. players wearing black armbands during the recent USA-Mexico match? Ridge Mahoney: William, I spoke to Jeff Agoos, who was the U.S. captain for that match, and he said the players voted to wear black armbands in memory of 17 U.S. sailors on the USS Cole who died in a bomb blast Oct. 12 in the Aden harbor of Yemen. A nice gesture by the players, and one I regret not mentioning in my account of the game.
