Swedish midfielder Anders Limpar is retirng after two seasons with the Colorado Rapids. Limpar, 35, joined the Rapids on February 10, 1999, as a foreign allocation. He played two seasons for the Rapids, appearing in 36 regular-season games, recording three goals and 15 assists and giving the Rapids a creative presence in the midfield. Frustrating injuries of considerable time periods prevented Limpar from reaching his full potential. He will leave MLS to return to his native home in Stockholm, Sweden and possibly pursue playing or coaching opportunities in Europe. “My family and I thoroughly enjoyed our time in Colorado,” said Limpar. “It was wonderful to play for the Rapids and I have no regrets whatsoever for the time that I spent playing in America. I was, however, frustrated with the many injuries that limited my role on the team.” Limpar brought an impressive pedigree to the Rapids, having appeared for Sweden in two World Cups, winning an English FA Cup with Everton in 1994-95, an English First Division championship with Arsenal in 1990-91, as well as a Swedish championship with AIK Stockholm in 1998 before joining the Rapids. Limpar’s retirement now brings the Rapids within the league’s recently mandated three foreign player limit for the 2001 season and 19 roster players.
