As witnessed by SA editors Will Kuhns and Ridge Mahoney in Columbus Tuesday, the following players are in camp for Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match against Costa Rica. (U.S. Soccer has not released the U.S. training camp roster.) Goalkeepers: Brad Friedel, Kasey Keller, Tony Meola.* Defenders: Jeff Agoos, Gregg Berhalter, Carlos Llamosa, Eddie Pope, Greg Vanney. Midfielders: Chad Deering, Diego Gutierrez, Cobi Jones, Jovan Kirovski, John O’Brien, Ben Olsen, Tony Sanneh. Forwards: Chris Albright, Clint Mathis, Joe-Max Moore, Ante Razov, Josh Wolff * Meola was not in camp Tuesday, but Coach Bruce Arena confirmed that he was trying to join the team Tuesday night or Wednesday morning. Q&A with Bruce Arena SA: Can you talk a little about the significance of this game? Bruce Arena: Well, with the result that Guatemala got in Barbados [a 3-1 win], that means that they’re still in the hunt and that this is a three-team race. We’re guaranteed advancement with three more points, so this game is critical. We’d like to get it done as soon as possible. SA: Can you talk about the health of the guys here in camp? Arena: The ones in camp are doing fine. SA: None of them are out for the game? Arena: No. SA: O’Brien can play? Arena: That’s a question mark. SA: Friedel? Arena: That’s a question mark. SA: A lot of new faces this time. How does that affect the camp? Arena: I think it’s been great, personally. We have a number of new faces who are enthusiastic about being here. They are talented players and that speaks well for our team in the future, but obviously there’s no future unless we get the business done in the present. Hopefully this gives us an opportunity to get a look at those players as well as give them some experience for what their going to need down the road. Those are the guys like the Mathis’s, Gutierrez, Albright, Wolff, etc. SA: Have you figured out how much communication or what type of communication you’ll be able to have during the game with Dave [Sarachan]? [EditorÆs note: Arena is suspended by FIFA from being on the bench] Arena: I think if I have some issues that Dave needs to know, he’ll hear about it. SA: Do mind me asking how? Arena: It’ll get there, believe me. It’s not rocket science. SA: You could always just open a window at Crew Stadium and yell down to the bench. … Do you feel a little shorthanded? Arena: Do I feel a little shorthanded? Actually, I think the group we’re going to put on the field is going to be a good group. Could it be a better group? Yeah, arguably. You don’t win games on paper, you win it on the field and we’re going to have 11 guys on the field who can win. SA: Are you concerned at all about on-the-field leadership without Claudio? Arena: No. SA: Do you know who’s going to wear the armband? Arena: Not yet. SA: Would you say a there is a little too much made of your suspension, in terms of its impact on the team? Arena: Yeah. It has no impact on the team, to be honest with you. SA: Because it’s only for the span of the game itself, when you have little influence anyway? Arena: Yeah. SA: Does that make it fun for you and Dave, almost? Arena: Well, obviously, the last thing I want to do is have him feel responsible for the game. I’ve tried not to do that. It’s not a fair position for him. I’m the one responsible. SA: Can you talk a little bit about this week, the way you’ve handled it? Not releasing the roster is something we’re not used to as media. Is there a specific reason for that? Arena: It’s real simple, but no one’s put their thinking hats on to figure it out. It wasn’t possible to release a roster a week ahead. We even have a new player coming in tonight. It hasn’t been that clean — when the MLS playoffs, all four teams, had their series extended until Friday night, it was impossible to name a roster. If everyone had advanced on Tuesday, we could have announced a roster on Wednesday. The federation said they were ready to put one out last night but it was quashed. Arena: What’s the big deal anyway? SA: It’s standard procedure. Arena: It’s not standard procedure, given these circumstances. It’s not a standard situation. SA: But is it not, for you, some sort of gamesmanship tactic? Arena: It’s a little bit of that, but I couldn’t have given you our roster last Thursday, I probably couldn’t have given it to you Friday after those games. SA: Flipping it around, does it make it more difficult if you’re not able to get an accurate roster of your opponent? Arena: To be very honest with you, I don’t think Costa Rica could care less who’s playing for us. I don’t think they’ve spent any time on it. And I don’t know if that’s accurate or not — only they know. SA: But do you care who’s on the roster and starting for them? Arena: Yeah, but they’re real easy to figure out. They’ve started the same team, basically in every game. It’s not even close to that in our situation and it can’t be, given injuries and suspensions.
