The following are quotes from the Oct. 3 MLS conference call featuring Chicago Fire forward Josh Wolff and MetroStars goalkeeper Mike Ammann. Ammann’s Opening Comments I would like to congratulate Josh on his fine performance in the Olympics. It was great to see the U.S. perform well over there, they did all of us Americans proud. I’d also like to thank all the fans that are out there that showed me support during my injury. It is good to put that behind me and just concentrate on playing. The series against Chicago has been great, they dominated Game One. We came back in Game Two and showed a little bit of what we are capable of. It’s going to be difficult in Game Three, but we are confident and we are looking forward to this. Wolff’s Opening Comments It’s good to be back here, I’m pretty well-rested now. We had a great tournament in Sydney, everyone was pretty pleased with how we did. It is disappointing that we didn’t get a medal. It’s going to be a big game on Friday. We are looking forward to it, this team has done well in big games. The MetroStars are a good team and they have shown a lot of spirit with Mike coming back. We will look to get on top of them at home, it figures to be an entertaining game. Ammann on the MetroStars’ injuries Tab Ramos did not practice today, he did some rehab things on his own. We had the last two days off, but today’s practice was good. The guys are prepared for the game, very excited to play. I feel better personally. I was sore following Game Two, but that was nothing that I didn’t expect. I feel better as the days go on. Wolff on the Fire’s attacking formation We’ve had a variety of formations up front. We have many different ways of playing. When Hristo has been healthy, he plays up top with [Ante] Razov at times and with me. We’ve had some inconsistencies due to the national team duty and injuries. When Ante and I play, we work as a tandem and attack off of each other. There’s no telling what lineup we will use. I trained with the team today and it was pretty light. Tomorrow, I think we’ll be more intense and go from there. Ammann on winning on the road Its one of those things where we are looking to score the first goal and get on top of them. We proved that here in Game Two, it is a bonus if you can do that. We are looking to come out and attack against them. As long as we can play consistent, I think we have a chance. Ammann on having Lothar Matthaeus in central defense instead of Daniel Hernandez It is a big loss to lose Daniel Hernandez. He was able to play well in central defense or defensive midfield with Billy Walsh. It is a different style with Lothar in there. He is really into this now, he sees another possible championship and he has picked up his game. He has so much experience and leadership, its very valuable. Wolff on returning from Australia It is easier coming from Australia back here. Going there, it was difficult to catch up on sleep. I am alright now, back on my sleeping patterns. It’s a matter of getting it out of my legs. Today, I did a jog and stretch and was able to play. In the next couple days it’s just a matter of taking care of whatever knocks I have and being ready for Friday for whatever role I will play. Ammann on returning from serious injury From all the reports I had, I was assured that my lung was completely healed. A pulmonary specialist gave me the go-ahead with that. Once my ribs healed, it was just a matter of getting back and playing. There is really no concern now, I have been back long enough, diving around on it where it’s fine now. The doctors were very surprised that I recovered so quickly. I have not been tentative at all this week. I was tentative when I first started practicing again, and that’s why I didn’t play in Game One. I wasn’t quite ready yet. I would not have played in Game Two if I thought I would be tentative. I was confident that I could play the way I’m capable of. That’s out of my head now. Ammann on Tim Howard coming back from the Olympics Timmy and I have had a great relationship. My wanting to come back quicker than next season was for the chance to win a championship. It is frustrating to sit on the sidelines and not be able to do anything. I came back to participate in this. Wolff on the Olympic experience For me, it was a goal from the get go. It was something that I set out to achieve and was very happy to go. I was able to see what a big event it was and the stage that we were on. We proved a lot to the rest of the world and to our country. We were able to show that MLS is a strong league and produces good players. The level of soccer was very high, not the full men’s national team, but still high. We got a good result in the first game and that allowed us to show that we can beat any team. We did very well for ourselves. Ammann on his stamina for Game Three My physical stamina is fine. At this point, its more of a mental game than anything else. I would look forward to a golden goal overtime situation should that arise on Friday. I’ve done some back dated video work to find tendencies of players. You basically just have to have the confidence to step up and perform. Ammann on the improvement of American soccer I think at the time when I went overseas it was 1994, before MLS, before Americans were ready for that level of competition. At this point, it’s night and day for the players here now. You look at the experience players get here in MLS now. Josh has been able to play games on a regular basis at a high level. If you go over to Europe as a young player and don’t’ get to play it serves no purpose. MLS has been tremendous in terms of developing players. Ammann on supporters clubs I think its tremendous, it gives players a lift to see a large crowd at home games. It has been inconsistent at our home games, we’ve had some midweek games that have hurt us. Supporters clubs are great, they add something to the games and gives a lift to our players. When it comes down to a final, I think if we get there you’ll see a lot more than just a couple hundred people do down there. It would definitely be to our advantage. Wolff on playing with several different strike partners When you play with Hristo, he can find you with any type of ball. Playing with Ante, you are up top along with him. It’s more difficult. The important thing is to stick together and play off each other. Dema Kovalenko is having a fantastic year as a midfielder, he is learning a lot. He is able to see holes, gaps in the field. He is also a good finisher, maybe one of the better ones on the team.
