BY SCOTT FRENCH IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA Danny Califf, Chris Albright and Landon Donovan scored goals and the U.S. men’s Olympic team on Tuesday completed a stunning run through its Group C competition at the Sydney Games, romping past Kuwait, 3-1, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win the group title and earn a quarterfinal assignment this weekend in Adelaide. The Americans (1-0-2), who overcame Cameroon in the standings when the Indomitable Lions (1-0-2) were held to a 1-1 tie by the Czech Republic, will learn its opponent on Wednesday with the completion of Group D play. All four D squads — Japan, South Africa, Brazil and Slovakia — remain in the hunt for a berth in the knockout phase; the Yanks will face the second-place squad on Saturday night. The United States had never advanced out of the group stage of a men’s Olympic event, but dominating performances in draws with the Czechs and Cameroon were followed by a one-sided victory over Kuwait’s amateurs. Califf, a central defender who earned his starting job when U.S. captain Brian Dunseth was unable to play at 100 percent in the Americans’ first Olympic clash, powerfully headed home a Jeff Agoos corner kick for a 1-0 advantage in the 40th minute. Albright doubled the lead midway through the second half, running onto a penetrating pass from John O’Brien and firing off Kuwaiti goalkeeper Shehab Kankone and into the net from a sharp angle to the left of the goal. Kuwait, which struggled on the rain-slickened turf, got one back in the 83rd minute, with Bader Najem slipping a Naser Alothman feed past U.S. keeper Brad Friedel, but Donovan — a first-half replacement for Conor Casey — restored the lead in the 88th. Donovan and Josh Wolff teamed for the goal, which provided the difference in the battle with Cameroon for the Group C title. The Americans finished with a plus-2 goal differential, and the Lions had a plus-1. Italy won Group A with a 1-1 tie against Nigeria, which also advanced to the quarterfinals, and Honduras finished third by beating Australia, 2-1, on a pair of David Suazo goals. In women’s play, Germany completed a perfect run through Group E with a 1-0 victory over Sweden in Melbourne, won on Ariane Hingst’s 88th-minute goal. Brazil claimed the other berth with a 2-1 triumph over Australia. Their semifinal opponents will be determined Wednesday, when the United States meets Nigeria in Melbourne and Norway takes on China in Canberra.
