The following are comments by U.S. coach Bruce Arena, captain Claudio Reyna and defender Gregg Berhalter following the U.S. 2-1 loss to Costa Rica in World Cup qualifying July 23. Bruce Arena: His thoughts on the last-minute goal by Costa Rica: ôDisgraceful. I probably saw the play as well as the referee. ôWe played very hard, very fair, and very honest today. Our players have conducted themselves wonderfully these last two games. They have nothing to be ashamed of. Our whole team is disappointed. ThatÆs not the way to decide a game.ö ôI thought we outplayed them in both halves, to be honest. They scored a good goal, give them credit, and itÆs difficult giving away a goal like that, but we had to fight real hard to get back into that game. Now we need to regroup, and we need to win our next three games.ö Defender Gregg Berhalter: Describing the play on which a penalty was called: ôHe crossed the ball and I headed it out of bounds. Then he (referee) called a penalty. It didnÆt hit off my chest, or my arm. I headed the ball. I blocked a cross with my head and he called a penalty kick. My hands were by my side, where they should be. The referee was behind me and there was no way he could have seen the play. It was a case where the referee was under pressure and he made a bad call. Midfielder Claudio Reyna: Describing the scene on the field after the disputed call: ôThere were a lot of emotions, and itÆs hard to control yourself after you think youÆve been robbed of points. We played a good game and we feel we deserve more. With the chances we had at the end we shouldÆve had at least a point, if not the win. On the refereeÆs position during disputed play: ôHe was in a very bad position. . I donÆt think he was awful the whole game, but that particular call was a very bad call. I donÆt know if that call was to make up for a penalty he didnÆt call before, but it was a terrible decision at that time of the game. ThereÆs nothing we can do about it now, though.ö
