A 3-0 victory over Mexico XI — a team comprised mainly of UNAM Pumas players — earned the USA the U.S. Cup 2000 title. The victory over the young Mexicans, after a 4-0 win against South Africa and a 1-1 tie with Ireland, gave the USA an insurmountable 7 points in the four-team tournament. Against Mexico XI, Brian McBride put the USA ahead, 1-0, in the 33rd minute after a nice combination of passes. Tony Sanneh, from his right back spot, delivered to ball to Earnie Stewart, who worked a one-two with Jones. After getting the ball back from Jones, Stewart stormed down the wing and sent a low ball to McBride at 8 yards out. McBride calmly sent a low shot past keeper Sergio Bernal. MexicoÆs Christian Ramirez was ejected in the 70th minute, receiving his second yellow after pulling down Jones on a breakaway. In the 79th minute, Frankie Hejduk made it 2-0 when he knocked in, from close range, a Jones shot that Bernal had deflected onto the post. In the 85th minute, Ante Razov stole a Paulo Cesar Chavez back pass and shot past Bernal to make it 3-0. Before its loss to the USA, the Mexico XI tied Ireland, 2-2, and beat South Africa, 4-2.
