USA-Tunisia (1-1)

Tony Meola (5). Nearly gave away a goal with a poor clearance in the 24th minute. Some will wonder why he was so advanced on the goal, but he didn’t have support and had to chase the shooter, whose shot was well-placed.

Carlos Llamosa (5). The veteran gets exposed too much as a wide back in the three-man system but recovers well. Good help from Chris Armas was important. Still drifts centrally too often.

Robin Fraser (6). Tended to get drawn too far out of the central area, but was sound and quick. Timed his tackles perfectly.

David Regis (7). Failed to make an impression over the first 45 minutes, showing his lack of consistent matches since fall. Steady without being adventurous. Got more involved after that, showing why he cannot be overlooked.

Cobi Jones (5). Played only the first half despite wearing the captain’s arm band. Too often left out of the attacking options by his mates. When he did get the ball, he created well. Defended extremely well, as usual.

Chris Armas (5). Not as involved as usual, partly because his game was too defensive. Often looked like a fourth back rather than a fifth midfielder. First-touch let him down too often, but he improved as the game matured.

Chad Deering (5). Lively presence in the advanced attacking role, but, like Jones, didn’t see enough of the ball. Might have been able to utilize his good vision more had he received better service.

John O’Brien (7). As good as anyone on the field in the first half. Came into it offensively as the minutes passed. Seemed he could have been an even greater influence if positioned further forward.

Eddie Lewis (7). Again a consistent option on attack in first half. Continues to create space for himself and was often dangerous. Not as much a factor in the second half but his last free kick led to the tying goal.

Jason Kreis (5). The man without a position played just like that, working hard trying to find one. Wasted scoring chances won’t help him book a consistent national team role, but he showcased his versatility and effort. Brings urgency to the team.

Brian McBride (6). Delivered as always, but had to come too deep to knock down balls and rarely got into good attacking positions himself. Created the tying goal with a great effort and led the attack in the last 10 minutes when the cause seemed lost.

Substitutes

Ben Olsen (7). Injected some life on the right side as soon as he came on. Tying goal was a deserved reward. Took on defenders off the dribble, a rarity among U.S. players.

Chris Albright (3). Made no impression during his 27 minutes.
