Jose Espada Silver Spring, Md. My question is, how is MLS going to decide tie games during the playoffs? Mike Woitalla: Not only do I not know, neither does MLS. Here’s what we do know: The three division winners will make the playoffs. The next five teams in overall standings also reach the playoffs, regardless of what division they’re in. The playoffs will be best-of-three series, with the first team to accumulate five points (based on a 3-1-0 system) going through. So, if you win twice you have six points and you’re through. Or if a team wins once and ties twice, it prevails with five points. Here’s the tricky issue, and it has not yet been resolved: A team goes into the third game with four points (from a win and a tie) and finds itself tied at the end of regulation of Game 3. At that point, it has five points, so theoretically it is through. But will MLS play overtime, and give the other team a chance to win and save itself? MLS has not decided what to do in this case. Would it dare create the curious scenario whereby regular-season games require overtime, but a playoff game doesn’t? Even if MLS decides to use the same tiebreaker as in the regular season — 10 minutes of golden-goal play — what happens if after overtime of Game 3 both teams, which split the first two games, are tied? We await MLS’s decision. The league has until September to decide.
