Defending champion Nigeria, Cameroon and Morocco all won their respective groups and earned a berth in the 2000 Olympics. The Super Eagles needed to goals in stoppage time to take the Group A title on the goal difference after Angola and Zimbabwe also finished the home-and-home round-robin competition with 12 points each Cameroon edged out South Africa by two points in Group B, while Morocco topped Group C. As the best second-place finisher among all three groups, South Africa will play New Zealand (Oceania winner) in a home-and-home playoff for a spot in the finals. The other finalists are host Australia, the three Asian representatives South Korea, Japan and Kuwait and the two South American finalists Brazil and Chile. The two TFC finalists and four European entrants will be determined later this spring. Australia and Brazil have been confirmed as seeds for the tournament, which will be played in four Australian cities in September.
