The U.S. women’s national team will play its next domestic match on April 8, 2000, at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., taking on Iceland in a game that will be broadcast live on ESPN2 (9 p.m. ET). The U.S. goes to Portugal in March to play in the Algarve Cup. U.S. coach April Heinrichs is expected to bring a roster to Ericsson that’s fully-loaded with members of the 1999 Women’s World Cup champions in what will be USA’s second appearance at the ultra-modern facility. Ericsson played host to the USA’s 9-0 thrashing of Japan in a Women’s World Cup warm-up match on April 29, 1999, in a game that saw forward Tiffeny Milbrett score four goals. The USA has played Iceland just twice in its history, both coming in May of 1998 when the Americans won 6-0 in Indianapolis, Ind., and picked up a hard-fought 1-0 victory in sloppy conditions at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa. “The game against Iceland will once again give us an opportunity to assess a deeper pool of players,” said Heinrichs. “By the time we get to April and this match, we should start having a good idea as to who our potential starters are.” Iceland is currently embroiled in qualifying for the 2001 European Women’s Football Championships, competing in Group 3 with Ukraine, Italy and Germany. Iceland has completed the first legs of all three series’, tying Ukraine, 2-2, also drawing with Italy, 0-0, while falling to Germany, 5-0. The winner of the group qualifies directly for the Euro 2001 Finals while the runner-up in the group will engage in a playoff for a spot in the eight-team final tournament.
