American Tab Ramos scored the winning goal in UNL’s 3-2 win over Puebla Dec. 9 to move Tigres into first place in the Mexican First Division’s Group 1.

Ramos scored on a free kick from just outside the penalty area to give Tigres the win. The win moved UNL into first place with 25 points, two ahead of Guadalajara and Veracruz.

Ironically, Tigres are more assured of being relegated than winning the title since the Mexican relegation system is based on cumulative winning percentages over the last three seasons. UNL is currently in last place.

The goal was Ramos’ second since joining Tigres in January. He scored on a penalty kick on the opening day of the 1995-96 season. He will play in MLS for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars after the Mexican season ends.

In other action involving Americans, Marcelo Balboa’s Leon was crushed by Necaxa 3-0 but maintained a one-point lead in Group 3 over Cruz Azul and Mike Sorber’s UNAM. Pumas fell to Atlante 4-3 in the highest-scoring match of the weekend.

Since a coaching change at Morelia, former UCLA star Jorge Salcedo has been relegated to the bench.
