The USA continues to lead Canada 1-0 at halftime of their World Cup qualifier in Burnaby, B.C. Claudio Reyna’s fourth-minute goal was the lone tally of the half. U.S. coach Steve Sampson, without suspended Jeff Agoos and John Harkes and injured Ernie Stewart, started a backline of Eddie Pope, Marcelo Balboa, Alexi Lalas and Mike Burns, with Thomas Dooley, Claudio Reyna, Joe-Max Moore and Eric Wynalda in midfield and Preki Radosavljevic and Roy Wegerle up front. The first-half was a ragged, end-to-end, physical affair. Canada managed a couple of scoring chances — Iain Fraser’s header off of a corner kick went just wide, and U.S. keeper Brad Friedel did well to punch Martin Nash’s blast clear at the half’s close. Reyna created a fine chance for the U.S. when he dribbled past several Canadian defenders into the left side of the area, but his low shot went wide of the right post. Canadian defenders Jason DeVos and Mark Watson were booked. Watson’s card was for pushing former New England Revolution teammate Burns.
