MLS has fined New England goalkeeper Jim St. Andre and Columbus forward Pete Marino for unsportsmanlike conduct in recent games, the league announced today.
St. Andre was docked $500 for his “professional foul” on MetroStars midfielder Roberto Donadoni during New England’s shootout victory on Saturday. Donadoni had beaten the keeper, but St. Andre deliberately pulled him down — Donadoni then missed the ensuing penalty kick.
The league also announced that the rules for “professional fouls” that apply during regulation play will also apply in the shootout. A keeper will be red-carded and ejected for such tactics, and will receive a one-game suspension. In addition, the team’s backup keeper may not be substituted for the ejected goalie — one of the ten remaining field players will have to man the nets.
Marino,.who is second on the Columbus team in scoring, was fined $250 for his intentional hand-ball goal that gave the Crew a 1-0 victory over Tampa Bay on July 25.
