It was a déjà vu performance from the New England Revolution, writes Frank Dell’Apa of the Boston Globe, as the Revs held on for 86 minutes after taking a 4th-minute lead against D.C. United, just as they did against the Chicago Fire last year en route to the MLS Cup. Of course, things didn’t pan out so well for New England after losing the championship to the L.A. Galaxy. Nevertheless, a solid defensive display after an impressive strike from Taylor Twellman was enough to see the Revs through to this year’s final, which will be against the Houston Dynamo, the deserved 3-1 winner against the flat Colorado Rapids. This will be New England’s third trip to the MLS Cup, after its fifth-ever appearance in an Eastern Conference title. “We have been playing great and we are where we wanted to be,” Revolution midfielder Shalrie Joseph told the Boston Globe. “We feel good and we have confidence after five years in a row. We know how great this team is, but we don’t know how much longer we are going to be together so we have a sense of desperation.” It was an impressive, unified defensive display from the Revolution defense. “I don’t remember a time when we thought they should have scored,” Revs coach Steve Nicol said. The Revs are definitely MLS’s in-form team, with a record of 7-1-2 in its last 10 games, and the slight favorite over Houston at Pizza Hut Park on Sunday.
