It was a bizarre weekend in Europe, as many of its big clubs lost, which we all know happens individually from time to time, but seldom in bunches. In England, Chelsea, Bolton, Portsmouth, Arsenal and Everton, holding positions 2-6 in the Premier League standings before the weekend started, each lost; Manchester United and Liverpool were the only big clubs that moved forward, winning 3-0 and 2-0 respectively. England winger Aaron Lennon sealed Chelsea’s fate in 53rd minute; Robbie Keane started the move by bamboozling Khalid Boulahrouz down the left and then delivering a deflected cross that Lennon settled and turned home on the half-volley. Arjen Robben curled a shot onto the left post towards the end, but Chelsea never really looked like coming back from 2-1. Meanwhile, at Upton Park, a last-gasp winner put West Ham United in raptures against Arsenal, after Marlon Harewood finished a world-class move down the left to beat the Gunners, 1-0, marking the club’s second consecutive victory after enduring a nine-game winless streak. In Spain, Deportivo Coruna drew with Barcelona, 1-1, at home, Valencia was held at Espanyol, while Real Madrid fell, 2-1, to Celta Vigo at the Bernabeu. Sevilla and Real Zaragoza took advantage by moving into first and place place, respectively. In Italy, the downward spiral continued for AC Milan and Fiorentina, which lost, 2-0 and 3-1, respectively. It was normal service as usual for the top three, as Inter Milan, Palermo, and Roma each posted convincing wins. French champion Lyon also caught the strange bug, losing 1-0 to Rennes, its first of the season after 12 games. Meanwhile, German champion Bayern Munich continues to struggle, managing to draw at Schalke after going behind 2-0.
