Colombian striker Antony De Avila has signed with the MetroStars, GM Charlie Stillitano announced yesterday.

De Avila, who has appeared nearly 50 times for his country’s national team, has spent 14 years with America Cali of the Colombian First Division. He led America to the final of the 1996 Libertadores Cup, scoring 14 goals in 14 games to lead all scorers in the competition.

“We looked at our team and the missing element was experience up front,” said Stillitano. “De Avila brings that experience. He’s a proven scorer and an exciting player and we think he will help us a great deal down the stretch and in the playoffs.”

The MetroStars were able to add De Avila as a fifth foreign player because of the departure of Ruben Dario Hernandez, who left the team June 19. De Avila will join the team on Tuesday, and will be in uniform when the Metros host New England Wednesday night.
