U.S. Soccer: Pope, Wagner join team in Richmond

Eddie Pope, hero of the MLS Cup ’96 with his winning goal in overtime, and David Wagner, the German-born striker at Schalke 04 who has American citizenship, joined the U.S. team at its training camp in Richmond, Va., for its game Nov. 10 against Trinidad & Tobago.

Defender Gregg Vanney has returned home, though Steve Sampson hopes to call him up for the Costa Rica Dec. 14 at Stanford Stadium.

Cobi Jones, Thomas Dolley and Claudio Reyna, who all were banged up in the tough 2-0 win over Guatemala, practiced with the team. Captain John Harkes rested to recover from a head cold.

More than 1,000 children watched the U.S. practice. Many Richmond schools were off today due to the national elections.
