D.C. United’s Argentine defender Mario Gori has signed a lengthy contract extension with Major League Soccer, team GM Kevin Payne announced Dec. 11.

The 23-year-old Gori was an integral part of D.C.’s championship run, starting all six post-season games and limiting Washington’s opponents to just seven goals.

“We are very excited that Mario will be returning to us for the 1997 season,” said D.C. coach Bruce Arena. “He’s not only a favorite with the fans, but one of the most popular players on our team. His return offers us the continuity in the back that we need to be successful.

Gori was also pleased to be back with D.C. United. “I was a part of something special here in Washington, being on the first MLS Championship team. The only thing that can be more special will be to successfully defend our title. I am very pleased to have the chance to do that.”
