When your father is someone like Scotsman Kenny Dalgish, one of the greatest players in the history of the English league soccer, you’ve got a tough act to follow if you want to be a soccer player. Jordi Cruyff, the son of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff and something of a journeyman in his varied soccer career, knows this, as does Houston Dynamo forward Paul Dalglish, whose father Kenny is regarded by many as the greatest Liverpool player of all time. That kind of notoriety casts a mighty long shadow over son Paul, but not long enough perhaps to reach Houston. How many Dynamo fans know who this guy’s father is? Not many, is the likely answer. It’s more likely they know that Paul Dalglish was the scorer of both goals that sent Houston past the Colorado Rapids last week and into the MLS Championship game. But both Dad and Mom are right there with him-in spirit that is. To keep in touch from UK, Kenny and his wife stream Paul’s matches over the Internet and contact each other via Web cam chat. “I probably speak to him more now than I did when I was at home,” Paul says of his father. The 29-year-old has had a varied career, failing to settle down at any of the numerous clubs where he’s played in England and abroad. After considering giving up the game altogether, Dalglish received an offer to come to the U.S. He joined the Dynamo in September, just before the cut-off date. “I had always wanted to come to the States, not just for the football but for the lifestyle,” Dalglish said. He noted that the standard of play is not as high as it is in England, but still, “the football out here is deadly serious.” He added, “I’ve no doubt that Sunday is the biggest game of my career.”
