Eddie Pope scored in the 35th minute to tie the match at 1-1.
Mexico’s Dulio Davino fouled Claudio Reyna outside the right corner of the area (a high kick for which the defender received the first yellow card of the match). Reyna took the resulting free kick and curved a ball into the box. After a poor Mexican clearance, Eric Wynalda headed the ball toward the far post. The ball slipped through a pair of players before Pope drilled it into the right corner of the net to tie the score.
