Being at the top isn’t getting any easier for Barcelona. The Spanish champion lost two more of its strikers during Sunday’s rousing contest against Real Zaragoza, which the Catalans won 3-1 thanks to the set-piece brilliance of Ronaldinho, who scored from one free kick and made another in the final four minutes of the game to lift his side past a battling Zaragoza. Barcelona is already without Samuel Eto’o, the team’s best striker, who is out of commission until February at the earliest, but they can now add Lionel Messi to the long-term injury list, after the Argentine suffered a broken metatarsal, which will keep him sidelined for at least three months. Javier Saviola, scorer of the third against Zaragoza, who had been deputizing in the absense of both Eto’o and Eidur Gudjohnsen, also suffered a thigh strain that will keep him sidelined for about six weeks. Thankfully for the Catalans, Gudjohnsen is now returning to full fitness, but the Icelandic is now the team’s only healthy center forward for the remainder of 2006. Coach Frank Rijkaard’s other options up front are now limited to Ronlaldinho, Ludovic Giuly, and Santi Ezquerro, a worrying sign considering that Barcelona soon faces two must-win matches in the Champions League against Werder Bremen and Levski Sofia in the next month.
