MLS has assigned Brazilian forward Gilmar to the Tampa Bay Mutiny as its fifth allocated player, the team announced today. Gilmar, 27, replaces Polish forward Jacek Ziober as the Mutiny’s 1997 allocation. Ziober is currently in Poland recovering from ACL surgery and will miss the rest of the season, although Tampa Bay still retains his rights. Gilmar has played for several Sao Paulo clubs since turning pro in 1990, including Ferroviaria, Guarini, Vila Nova, and Internacional Limeira. “We went through a painstaking process of seeking who we believe will be just the right fir for what we need,” said Tampa Bay GM Nick Sakiewicz. “Gilmar, we believe, is that player. He is a very hard-working player who is not afraid to play in both boxes. He also possesses the technical and tactical expertise necessary to turn us into a more proficient team.” Gilmar is expected to arrive in Tampa in two weeks, pending arrangement for a work visa.
