MLS champion D.C. United picked up Roy Wegerle from the Colorado Rapids in a trade for striker Steve Rammel July 3. The deal is the biggest so far this season, sending the veteran U.S. national team striker to Washington. Wegerle had little luck in Colorado, scoring just four goals in 31 games, but his style of play is expected to fit in with United. Rammel was the find of the ’96 MLS season, scoring 14 goals in 26 games after United convinced him to leave his job as an assistant coach at the University of Massachusetts. “His production helped save the season for our team,” said D.C. United president and general manager Kevin Payne. Rammel’s production slipped this season: one goal in 11 games. “Roy Wegerle is a player I personally have admired for a long time,” Payne added. “He has a great deal of service in the English Premier League. But in spite of his past experience, I believe his style is more suited to D.C. United than to it is to England, so he’ll fit in well here and will provide the veteran leadership in our drive to repeat as MLS champion.” In separate moves, D.C. United waived goalie Jeff Causey, waived and then re-signed to a 30-day contract midfielder Joe Thieman, and signed to a 30-day contract goalie Tom Presthus, a draft pick out of SMU.
