San Jose Clash forward Eric Wynalda will undergo surgery July 3 to repair a nagging groin injury and will be out for 6-8 weeks, the Clash announced. Wynalda, the U.S. national team’s all-time leading scorer, was examined yesterday by Dr. William Meyers, who will perform adductor release surgery at the University of Massachusetts hospital. “The important thing now is that we get Eric healthy,” said San Jose GM Peter Bridgwater. “From the Clash’s perspective, though, what the injury has done is create a sense of urgency about filling our open roster spot for an international player. We have a Mexican player coming in next week to try out, and, hopefully, he’ll be someone we can add to the team who can help us immediately.” Wynalda initially suffered the injury while training with the U.S. national team for its World Cup qualifier against Mexico in April. He managed to play the full 90 minutes in that match, but missed four of the next five San Jose games. He reaggravated his groin during the U.S.-Israel friendly match June 17, and has not played since. “Obviously, we’re going to miss Eric, but I’d rather have him healthy for the final month of the season than trying to nurse an injury that might require surgery eventually anyway,” said Clash head coach Brian Quinn. “We’ll just do our best without him and try to be in the best position possible when he returns.”
