The draw for the final stage of World Cup ’98 qualifying in Asia will be held July 22 in Zurich. FIFA has announced that the format for the final stage will be for the ten teams to be drawn into groups of five teams each. 1994 World Cup entrants Saudi Arabia and South Korea will each be drawn into a group, with the remaining eight nations drawn freely. Teams will play home and away matches against the other four members of their group. The two group winners qualify automatically for World Cup ’98, as does the winner of a home-and-away playoff between the two runners-up. The loser of the playoff will meet Australia in a home-and-away playoff for a berth at France ’98. The fourth-place vs. Australia playoff will be held Nov. 22 and 29.
