Costa Rica named Spaniard Juan Luis Hernandez as its new national team coach, replacing Argentine Horacio Cordero, who was fired Aug. 13, three days after Costa Rica was held to a 0-0 tie by El Salvador in a World Cup qualifier. Hernandez, currently in charge of First Division Cartagines, became the team’s third coach this year following the dismissal of popular Brazilian Valdeir “Badu” Vieira and Cordero. Vieira, who led Costa Rica through to the Hexagonal last fall, was dismissed in January when he refused to drop a claim for unpaid wages against Alajuela, the local club he previously coached. Hernandez blamed poor discipline for a disappointing sequence of recent results and promised to impose tougher rules on the squad. Costa Rica — which employed three coaches en route to qualifying for Italia ’90 — is in second place in the Hexagonal, with a two-point lead over the United States and El Salvador, but it plays three of its last four games away, beginning with a trip to the United States Sept. 7. Costa Rican federation officials were apparently impressed with The away tactics that Hernandez’s Cartagines team used in its CONCACAF Champions’ Cup quarterfinal match in Guadalajara Aug. 16. Cartagines fell to Mexican champion Chivas by only 1-0.
