The following are the pairings for the European World Cup playoffs:
- Croatia vs. Ukraine
- Russia vs. Italy
- Ireland vs. Belgium
- Hungary vs. Yugoslavia
The teams will play home-and-away matches Oct. 29 and Nov. 15 or 16, with the first team hosting the first leg. If the two teams are equal on goals after 90 minutes of the second match, away goals will be counted double. If the two teams are equal on away goals, two 15-minute overtime periods will be played, with the golden goal rule being in effect. If no goal is scored during the extra time, penalty kicks will be taken.
