D.C. United midfielder Marco Etcheverry will be loaned to Barcelona of Ecuador for two months beginning in November, MLS and D.C. United officials announced today. Etcheverry, 27, scored three goals and added 11 assists during the 1997 season for D.C., and led the league with 19 assists in 1996. Barcelona is a 12-time champion of Ecuador, most recently in 1995. It won the Ecuador’s Torneo Apertura and currently lies fourth in the Torneo Clausura with eight matches remaining. The two tournament winners meet for the national championship, and both qualify for the Copa Libertadores. Etcheverry will join Barcelona after D.C. United’s appearance in the U.S. Open Cup final, which will be Oct. 29 in Indianapolis. He will play with the Ecuadorian club for the remainder of the 1997 season and rejoin D.C. United early next year when it begins preparations for the 1998 MLS season.
