UCLA and Virginia are scoreless at halftime of the NCAA championship match in Richmond, Va. Virginia has created the better scoring chances, especially as the half progressed, but UCLA keeper Matt Reis and the Bruin defense have done a superb job to keep the Cavaliers off the board. In the 14th minute, Virginia’s Brian West received a flick from teammate Ben Olsen and broke free past two defenders, but Reis had made a fine save to deflect the forward’s driven shot. 20 minutes later, off of a Virginia throw-in, West palyed a quick ball across the box to Chris Albright, who hit a low shot to the left post. Reis made a superb diving save to smother the ball. In the 40th minute, Albright sprung Olsen with a fine pass, and Olsen dropped the ball back for an onrushing West, but he was again denied by Reis. UCLA had a pair of good opportunities through Tom Poltl, the best coming in the 6th minute, when he pounced on a Virginia defensive error, but his 20-yard blast sailed just wide. There have been no yellow cards thus far in this cleanly-played match.
