The 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup Organizing Committee announced Jan. 15 that ABC and ESPN will combine to televise all 32 matches of the world championship. The third Women’s World Cup will receive an unprecedented 64 hours of coverage. “This is not only a tremendous step for the Women’s World Cup, but a giant leap for television coverage of women’s sports as well,” said organizing committee president Marla Messing. “ABC/ESPN has once again affirmed its standing as the place to turn in the United States for coverage of the world’s premier soccer events.” ABC will broadcast the opening match, featuring the U.S. women playing at Giants Stadium on Saturday, June 19, and the Final, which is scheduled to take place July 10 at the Rose Bowl. ABC may also broadcast a semifinal match from Stanford Stadium on July 4. ESPN and ESPN2 will show the remaining 29 matches, with ESPN showing four first-round games, the anticipated U.S. quarterfinal match at Jack Kent Cooke Stadium and the second semifinal match. If the U.S. does not reach the semifinals, ESPN or ESPN2 will also air the semifinal match at Stanford Stadium. Of the 32 games, 27 will be shown live with the remaining five matches aired on a same-day delay. “We’re delighted to present the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup,” said ESPN programming vice president Steve Risser. “ABC Sports, ESPN and ESPN2 are America’s soccer networks, so it’s a natural fit.” Here is the tentative broadcast schedule for the 1999 Women’s World Cup: Note: games will be played at Civic Stadium (Portland, Ore.), Foxboro Stadium (Foxboro, Mass.), Giants Stadium (East Rutherford, N.J.), Jack Kent Cooke Stadium (Washington, D.C.), Rose Bowl (Pasadena. Calif.), Soldier Field (Chicago), Spartan Stadium (San Jose, Calif.), and Stanford Stadium (Palo Alto, Calif.).
