The USA and Cuba are tied 0-0 at halftime in their Gold Cup first round match. The U.S. has dominated the match in terms of possession, scoring opportunities and corner kicks (7-0), but has been unable to capitalize. The Americans were unfortunate to have an apparent Eric Wynalda goal disallowed for offside in the sixth minute. Wynalda had done well to one-touch Roy Wegerle’s cross into the top of the Cuban net. Wynalda, Wegerle and Frankie Hejduk have all broken free down the Cuban flanks. In the 19th minute, Wynalda beat his man down the right side and crossed the ball to the far side of the box, where it was touched back to Jeff Agoos, whose shot just sailed over the crossbar. Wegerle broke free to latch onto a long pass and beat the Cuban keeper Reve to the endline, but his cross back was headed away by a Cuban defender positioned in front of the open goal. Cobi Jones (header wide) and Joe-Max Moore (free kick just over the bar) also had chances for the U.S. Cuba’s best opportunity came in the final minute of the half, when a counterattack sprung Cebranco past two U.S. defenders, but his low shot was poor and went wide right. Gregg Berhalter was booked for the U.S. in the 10th minute, while Reve received a card for delay in the 18th.
