Steve Sampson called up German-based players Chad Deering (First Division Wolfsburg) and David Wagner (Second Division Guetersloh) for the first time this year, giving them perhaps their last chance to make the U.S. World Cup team. Deering and Wagner are the only foreign-based players on the U.S. roster for its game against Paraguay March 14 in San Diego (kickoff: noon Pacific time; TV coverage: live on ABC). The U.S. roster: Goalkeepers — Mark Dodd (Dallas), Juergen Sommer (Columbus Crew). Defenders — Marcelo Balboa (Colorado Rapids), Mike Burns (New England Revolution), Thomas Dooley (Columbus Crew), Brian Dunseth (New England Revolution), Alexi Lalas (MetroStars), Greg Vanney (San Jose Clash). Midfielders — Chad Deering (Wolfsburg, Germany), Frankie Hejduk (Tampa Bay Mutiny), Chris Henderson (Colorado Rapids), Cobi Jones (Los Angeles Galaxy), Brian Maisonneuve (Columbus Crew), Joe-Max Moore (New England Revolution), Mike Sorber (MetroStars). Forwards — Brian McBride (Columbus Crew), Preki Radosavljevic (Kansas City Wizards), Roy Lassiter (Tampa Bay Mutiny), David Wagner (Guetersloh, Germany), Eric Wynalda (San Jose Clash). Due to the MLS opener the next day, Sampson has not called up any players from D.C. United.
