Polish striker Jerzy Podbrozny has been allocated to the Chicago Fire. The 31-year-old forward, who has made six appearances for the Polish national team, is Chicago’s fifth international player. “Podbrozny is a very experienced international player, who will bring his goalscoring abilities to our team, as well as a good work ethic and attitude,” said Chicago head coach Bob Bradley. “With all of our internationals now set, we are ready to compete in the Western Conference.” Podbrozny began his career with his hometown team Polna Przemsl and later played for Polish clubs Resovia Rzeszow and Igloopol Debica. In 1991, he transferred to Lech Poznan, where he proceeded to score 48 goals in 85 games and led the Polish First Division in scoring in two straight seasons. He then moved to Legia Warsaw for two and a half seasons. With Legia, he competed in the UEFA Champions League during the 1995-96 season and scored a goal against England’s Blackburn Rovers. In 1996, he moved abroad for the first time, joining Merida of the Spanish Second Division and helping the club get promoted to the Primera Liga. He has been playing with Deportivo Toledo of the Spanish Second Division this season. “Podbrozny fills an important need for us, an up-front striker,” said Fire GM Peter Wilt. “He has proven himself at a very high level of soccer in Poland and throughout Europe.” Podbrozny is due to join the Fire in time for its season opener against Miami on March 21.
