The Colorado Rapids have traded forward Steve Rammel to the MetroStars in exchange for a first-round pick in the 1999 supplemental draft. Rammel joined the Rapids last July in a trade that sent Roy Wegerle to D.C. United. He played in ten regular season and five playoff games, but did not score a goal. “Playing time for Steve would have been limited here,” said Rapids coach Glenn Myernick. “The MetroStars expressed an interest in Steve in part due to his New Jersey roots. It is a good move for both parties involved.” Myernick said the Rapids expect to sign another player, an “international caliber goalscorer” in the next week or two. The MetroStars gain a striking partner for Giovanni Savarese if Rammel can rediscover his scoring touch. He scored 15 goals in 32 games for D.C. United, including the first hat trick in MLS history. “The addition of Rammel will help alleviate some of the pressure on Savarese up front,” said MetroStars GM Charlie Stillitano. “I believe Steve will prove to be a key piece of the puzzle.”
